Readings about Kyoto successors, limitations

Nature has a really nice special issue on Kyoto in preparation for COP18. This news item makes some nice points about the limitations of Kyoto, outlining some history and prospects for the future (plus some good quotes from my friend Roger Pielke Jr.). There is another nice piece by Dieter Helm. This is in some ways a synopsis of his very good book - the Carbon Crunch. Both of these articles make the point that despite several nations meeting their Kyoto targets, success is dubious if you consider carbon consumption, or each individual's carbon footprint. Here is another piece by Helm with some more details.

This figure from the Nature special issue clearly shows the big players and the role of coal!
