Decarbonization calcs: Australia and the world

As promised, here are decarbonization calculations for Australia and the world.


As you can see, Australia is fairly carbon intensive compared with the other developed countries we've looked at. Also, the decarbonization rate is quite modest. Meeting the emission reduction goals would require a pretty dramatic acceleration of the decarbonization rate. I think this is particularly challenging for Australia because the economy has such a strong reliance on industry that requires lots of energy: mining.


You might have expected that the world decarbonization curve looks a lot like that of the US - and that's true. The current carbon intensity is similar and the declining trend somewhat mirrors that of the US. Notice the slow-down in ~2000 followed by a decline after ~2003. Not sure what's causing this, but it certainly indicates the continued decarbonization in the west and the uptick in China around that time.
