I just found a really interesting source of global data on all sorts of things. The world bank has produced data by country over time for several items - energy, environment, etc. Here is a link to data on US, German, and World energy use/person trends.
You can see the trend in US energy use that's been in the news. Looks to me like a short-term reduction associated with the GFC. Time will tell...
